FRAIL elderly drivers should be banned from motorways and dual carriageways, a motoring organisation said yesterday.

The Institute for Advanced Motorists want a new class of driving licence stopping some pensioners from going on main roads where the speed limit is 70mph.

The call came after analysis of police crash data showed older drivers were at increased risk on motorways or where traffic was moving quickly. It also revealed that the elderly were safer than younger drivers on some local roads.

IAM policy director Neil Greig said: "We do not think this should be a blanket ban."

"But where there is medical evidence a motorist could pose a risk to themselves and others, this could be a sensible compromise."

"This would have to be done on a case-by-case basis following medical advice."

But the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said there would be major practical difficulties.

And the Department of Transport said: "We have absolutely no plans to change licensing arrangements for older drivers."
